Rally blocks Vancouver traffic to oppose crackdown on vehicle dwellers

Next:
Assign students to small group(2-3) to work on completing ALL  below questions - 1 sheet per group to be handed in - all names at the top. Post completion host class discussion on the below questions.

1.“Listen Chen, an organizer with the Red Braid Alliance for Decolonial Socialism, said Wednesday’s (May 26 2021) rally was “to show the city it cannot continue to criminalize poverty and send the message that people are supposed to disappear into thin air.”

What does criminalizing poverty mean to you/your group? Do you agree with Chen’s perspective that the city of Vancouver cannot continue to criminalize poverty by displacing the RV residents of 12th and Slocan? Why or why not.

2. Is it the BC/Canadian Government’s job to provide affordable housing during a pandemic & housing crisis? Why or why not?

3. Many of the RV inhabitants have fallen onto hard times whether via outcomes of the pandemic and or mental health issues (leading to lack of being able to secure and hold down work). Is it the BC/Canadian Government’s job to provide affordable housing for those who struggle with mental health issues? Why or why not?

4. “The City of Vancouver says it has been actively monitoring vehicle-dwelling “hotspots” for the last six months and address complaints about “the accumulation of garbage and other debris, noise and human waste.”

What could the city of Vancouver do or provide for these inhabitants that would reduce garbage/noise/human waste concerns without completely displacing these RV residents?

5. Regarding our novel ‘No Fixed Address’ what should be provided by the government and or other services (if anything) for Astrid and Felix at this time in their lives?
