Day 1: Setting the Stage and Film Viewing

  1. Introduction (10 minutes)

    • Brief overview of Jessica Watson’s journey as the youngest person to solo sail around the world.
    • Jessica Watson is an Australian sailor who, at just 16 years old, became the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop, and unassisted around the world. Her incredible journey began on October 18, 2009, and lasted 210 days, covering nearly 23,000 nautical miles. She faced massive waves, technical issues, and long stretches of isolation, but her determination and resilience inspired people all over the globe.

Jessica's voyage challenged not only the sea but also the public's expectations of what young people can achieve. Her story became a symbol of courage, perseverance, and the power of believing in yourself—even when others doubt you.

    • Questions:
      • What motivated Jessica Watson?
      • What challenges did she face physically and emotionally?
      • How does the film use storytelling techniques to convey her journey?
  2. Film Viewing

    • Begin streaming True Spirit.
    • Ask students to jot down notable scenes, quotes, or moments that stand out to them and why.

If Tikme: Post Film Completion - Analysis and Reflection

  1. Discussion

    • Break the students into pairs to discuss:
      • What themes stood out in the film?
      • How does the movie portray perseverance?
      • What role did Jessica’s support system play in her success?
      • Were there moments of doubt or failure, and how were they addressed?
    • Have each group share their thoughts with the class.
