May 23 2025 Street Art > Banksy Inspiration = Fun Friday!!!

 Medium: Sidewalk Chalk

Objective:

Students will create their own temporary street art piece using sidewalk chalk that includes hidden messages or symbols, inspired by Banksy and other street artists.

Student Instructions:

  1. Choose a Theme:
Think about a social issue or personal theme that matters to you. This could include:

    • Climate change

    • Inequality

    • Mental health

    • Identity

    • Freedom of speech

    • Personal struggles or hopes

  2. Plan Your Art:
Sketch a rough idea on paper (optional) before drawing with chalk.
Consider how you can express your message using symbols or visual metaphors, just like Banksy does.

    Examples of Hidden Symbolism:

    • 🔗 A broken chain = freedom from control

    • 🚪 A cracked door with light = hope, new beginnings

    • 🐦 A bird in a cage = oppression vs. freedom

  3. Create Your Chalk Art:

    • Use the sidewalk outside (or any designated area) to create your piece.

    • Work in small groups or individually.

    • Be thoughtful about your design, placement, and message.

  4. Presentation

  • Students can briefly explain their piece to the class, discussing:

    • Their message or theme

    • The symbols they used
